OCIBE Founders

OCIBE is the abbreviation of Overseas Chinese International Biomedical Engineering. Our core research directions include Bionics, Engineering Cybernetics, and Kinetics (in the bioengineering scenario), which are technological terms invented in this century. Although the terms Engineering and biology existed hundreds of years before and it forms the integrated important components of technological advancement in human history, they have never been truly combined into action until this century. We now know their intricate relationship, and aims to promote the science of it. As such, OCIBE would deal with automotive control systems, like robots doing surgery or printing organs, as well as manufacturing bionic limbs. We would try to devise technology to benefit humankind in this aspect. We look very much forward into the future in terms of biomedical engineering based technological advancement.

The OCIBE symbol is based on an interesting design rationale. The two snakes on a staff is a prominent symbol of medicine in history. In the bible, The LORD once said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a staff; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” Following the command of God, Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a staff. As a result, whenever anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they survived. This symbol of the snake on a pole became the symbolic representation of medicine throughout history.

Next, the Eagle head icon is used in heraldry as a symbol of power and a prominent leader, and also as a keeper of people. The eagle's keen eyes symbolized perspicacity, courage, strength and sometimes even immortality. In ancient Greek, the Eagle head and its wings is also considered as the ruler of the skies and a messenger of God. The red cross is a symbolized protection of the wounded and for all those who attend and care for them. The two olive leaves signify peace or victory historically.

The OCIBE logo is specially designed in a way that I hope would represent our mission to serve humanity through medical research.
